Health psychology is the study of psychological and behavioural processes in health, illness, and healthcare.[1] It is concerned with understanding how psychological, behavioural, and cultural factors contribute to physical health and illness. What Will You Learn?

  • Demonstrate understanding of the biological, behavioural, cognitive and social determinants of health, and risk factors for health-compromising behaviours and strategies for their modification, across the lifespan.
  • Demonstrate advanced knowledge of individual, group and community-based approaches to the prevention and management of major identifiable health conditions (both acute and chronic).
  • Demonstrate the capacity to critically evaluate research in health psychology and use this knowledge to explain mind-body interactions to health-care consumers and professionals.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of the principles of inter-professional learning and practice

Module 1

  • Models of health psychology and the roles of health psychologists, including in chronic illness & disabilities
  • Interprofessional learning and collaborative practice
  • Pain, somatising and conversion disorders in child and adolescent populations
  • Student presentations related to headaches, obesity, sleep, chronic fatigue syndrome
  • Models and interventions, injury rehabilitation and compensation
  • Models and interventions, preparation for surgery, interprofessional collaboration

Module 2

  • Addiction, alcohol and other drug use preventions, treatment and relapse prevention
  • Motivational interviewing in a health context
  • Assessment and intervention in sleep disorders
  • Assignments

Module 3

  • Health psychology and ageing
  • Assessment and intervention in cancer
  • Understanding grief and loss and bereavement in a range of contexts
